Engineering Management Graduate Program
Educational Objectives, Program Outcomes, and Assessment
Purpose Program learning outcomes are articulated for curricular and co-curricular programs. They must be articulated for every undergraduate and graduate degree and approved certificate program to meet NWCCU accreditation requirements.
Engineering Management Program Objective Statement
As a faculty we are committed to a transformational educational experience that focuses on both the professional and personal development of our students. We want our graduates to have and continue to develop a strong foundation in the principles of engineering and management. We want our graduates to know how to apply these principles as they plan, organize, lead, and manage technical organizations. We want our graduates to exhibit our core values of mutual respect, doing what is right, seeking personal and professional growth, teamwork, and enjoying life. We expect our graduates to have a positive impact on both their profession and community and to be able to effectively communicate their role as engineers and managers, thus improving their communities and the world in which we live.
These objectives specifically support the University of Idaho’s strategic objectives that include: a transformational educational experience of discovery, understanding, and global citizenship, excellence in scholarship, outreach, and a climate that is adaptable, dynamic, and efficient.
Engineering Management Graduate Program Outcomes
We have established program outcomes in concert with the guidelines established by the UI Goal 1 Implementation Team. We are further advised by the policies and guidelines established by the American Society for Engineering Management (ASEM). These outcomes are:
- Learn and integrate – Through independent learning and collaborative study, attain, use and develop knowledge in math and statistics, science, engineering, and business across all functional areas of an organization.
- Think and create – Use multiple thinking strategies from operational analysis and improvement, technical analysis, organizational analysis, and program management to tackle problems in a complex, technical environment.
- Communicate – Demonstrate a command of written and oral communication skills in English. Students must communicate with the technical workforce and members from all functional areas of an organization.
- Clarify purpose and perspective – Display an awareness of personal and professional responsibility to make the world a better place and recognize the importance of lifelong learning.
- Practice citizenship – Behave in an ethical manner with mutual respect for everyone. Always exhibit socially responsible behavior and respect for diversity in ways that will sustain local and global communities.
Assessment Process Used to ensure Graduates Achieve Program Outcomes
The assessment plan of the Engineering Management Graduate Program is currently in development and is in various stages of implementation in preparation for a future, initial accreditation review by the ASEM. Out goal is to establish a program that implements continuous quality improvement. We are focusing on course-level assessment and overall program-level assessment. The initial program-level assessment has already been conducted.
Course-Level Assessment
· Identify outcomes for required courses and concentration areas within the curriculum.
· Map these outcomes into program outcomes.
· Conduct assessment each year and integrate into historical data.
· Make adjustments within courses as indicated by the assessment.
Program-Level Assessment
· Conduct assessment each year of program outcomes and integrate into historical data.
· Make adjustments in the program as indicated by the assessment.
